Hawks Split Conference Doubleheader with Baruch

Staten Island, NY – After a low scoring first game that saw the Hawks come up short by just a run to the Baruch Bearcats, the Hawks would go on to score eight runs the second game, led by sophomore short stop Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) who hit 2-of-3 with three runs scored and one batted in the 8-2 victory Monday morning at the College of Staten Island.

Senior pitcher Nicole Grilli (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) got the start on the mound in the first game for the Hawks, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and struck out eight batters. Sophomore Andrea Tepfer (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) also went all seven innings, striking out seven batters and allowing one earned run in the victory for the Bearcats.

Baruch short stop Melissa Pena (Queens Village, N.Y. / W.C. Bryant) opened up the game with a triple and was brought home three batters later to get the Bearcats on the board first. They would tack on the second run in the top of the third inning when Pena doubled to right field to bring in sophomore Chrystal Sanchez (Harlem, NY/Mt. St. Ursula) who had reached on a leadoff single.

Senior first baseman/outfielder Jennifer Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) got the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in a run on a deep single to centerfield. However, the Hawks would end up going down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) made the start on the mound for the Hawks in the second game, pitching seven innings, five scoreless, striking out ten batters and giving up no earned runs. From the plate, the Hawks took advantage of sophomore Lynn Schiano (Middle Village, NY/St. Francis Prep) form the start, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the first inning and on three more in the fifth and two in the sixth inning. McKenna had another multi-hit game, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a run batted in.

After today's games, the Hawks are now 10-16 overall and stand in first place with a 7-1 record in the CUNY Athletic Conference. They will look to continue their success from the today when they face John Jay on Tuesday, April 14 for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader.
