McKenna’s Triple Rallies Hawks to 6-5 Victory Over Ramapo

Staten Island, NY – Sophomore short stop Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) tripled to right-center, bringing in two runs including the game-winner as the Hawks rally from a 4-2 deficit to go on to defeat Ramapo College 6-5 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, NY.

After falling behind 4-0 through three and a half innings, the Hawks began to chip away at the lead, scoring a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman catcher Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) led the bottom of the sixth off with a single and was brought home two batters later when sophomore Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) made just her second plate appearance of the season, laying down a perfect sacrifice bunt that allowed Zieff to take home. Senior second baseman Catherine Alves reached on a fielder's choice and then junior outfielder Stephanie Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) brought drove in a run with a single to bring tie the game at four a piece. McKenna's triple brought home both Alves sisters to give Hunter a 6-4 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Ramapo sophomore outfielder Rachel Wong (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) reach on a deep double to centerfield and was brought home three batters later. However, with a runner in scoring position at second, McKenna made the game-winning toss to first as the Hawks complete a huge come from behind win.

Senior Nicole Grilli picked up the victory in game-two, going all seven innings with three strikeouts, while sophomore Lyndsay Buehler (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) takes the loss for Ramapo with just .1 of an inning on the mound. The Roadrunners used three pitchers in the second game, totaling six strikeouts and allowing six earned runs.

In the first game, Ramapo earned an 8-0 six-inning win led by Wong who went 3-for-4 with a run scoring and batted in, and freshman outfielder Danielle Rothenberger (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) who finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored.

Buehler earned the victory on the mound, pitching six innings, striking out seven batters and giving up just three hits, while Damroth struck out four batters in the loss.

Following today's game, Ramapo now falls to 23-7 on the year, while the Hawks improve to 13-17 overall. Hunter will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to Madison, NJ for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader with Drew University.
