Madison, NJ – Sophomore outfielder
Christina Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Saviour) got things going in the top of fifth with a single and was brought home two batters later to start a five-run inning that would lead to a 5-1 victory in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader with Drew University on Tuesday afternoon in Madison, NJ.
After two and a half scoreless innings, Drew led off the bottom of the third with a single, which was followed by a big hit to center field that appeared to be out of the park, but junior outfielder
Stephanie Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) reached over the fence to rob the homerun and keep the game scoreless. The Hawks then got some breaks in the top of fifth as the Rangers committed three big errors that allowed Hunter to build up the five-run lead.
Sophomore
Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) pitched seven innings, striking out eight batters and allowed one earned run for her fifth win of the season.
Baker finished the game hitting 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the second game, senior
Nicole Grilli (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) went six innings, giving up two earned runs on a double in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh,
Alves hit a double that brought in a run, but the next two batters weren't able to keep the rally going as the Hawks fell 2-1.
The Hawks will remain on the road as they head down to Camden, NJ on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader with Rutgers University-Camden 4:00 p.m.
