Hawks Steal a Game in Extra Innings

Camden, NJ – Three seasons removed from their National Championship Run, the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors had a game stolen away from them on Thursday when the Hawks were able to score the game-winning run on a botched play at first base to take a 2-1 victory in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader in Camden, NJ.

Senior Nicole Grilli (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) pitched yet another great game, going eight innings allowing just five hits and one unearned run for her ninth victory of the season and the team's 15th win on the year.

After going five innings without a run, junior outfielder Stephanie Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) tripled and was brought home two batters later on an RBI sacrifice fly from fellow junior Jacqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) to give Hunter a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning.

However, with the game on the line, the Scarlet Raptors found a way to tie things up when a double by freshman short stop Beth Speakman (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) brought home junior Nikki DiVece (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook Regional) who led off the inning by reaching on an error.

Then in extra innings, with senior Catherine Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) on second base via the international tiebreaker rule, senior Jennifer Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) reached on the error at first and Alves was able to cross the plate. Grilli then helped to close out the game in the bottom half of the inning, recording three straight putouts.

In the first game, the Hawks struggled at the plate as senior Natalie Powell (Williamstown, NJ/Wiliamstown) pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. Sophomore Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) takes the defeat on the mound Hawks after pitching three innings. Freshman Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) relieved Damroth in the bottom of the fourth inning, pitching one inning and giving up four runs, one earned.

The Hawks will now return to action on Saturday, April 25 when they are scheduled to battle with the College of Staten Island to determine who will be the top seed heading into next week's CUNYAC Championship Tournament.
