Flushing, NY – Sophomore short stop
Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) kept the Hawks in the winners bracket with a three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth innings, giving Hunter an 8-0 victory over the fourth-seeded John Jay College in the first day of the double-elimination championship tournament hosted at Queens College in Flushing, NY.
Junior catcher
Jacqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) got Hunter on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot over the left field fence. The Hawks then scored runs in the fourth, fourth and fifth innings before closing out the game in the sixth.
Sophomore
Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) got the start on the mound for the Hawks, striking out six batters and giving up just three hits in the shutout victory. Sophomore Angela Lam (Brooklyn, NY/Newtown) pitched 5.2 innings for the Bloodhounds, giving up five earned runs and walking four batters.
Senior second baseman
Catherine Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) had a strong game from the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
In game two of the championship, the second-seeded College of Staten Island defeated the third-seeded Baruch College 5-0. Baruch and John Jay then faced-off in the elimination game, however after four innings the game was halted as the skies opened up with a friendly May thunderstorm. That game will resume on Saturday along with the winners bracket game between Hunter and Staten Island.
Following today's rain fall, the field at Queens College will need to be prepped for Saturday, however if that field is deemed unplayable on Saturday, there is the possibility of the championship changing venues and concluding play at the College of Staten Island if their field is in playable conditions.
