Hawk Grapplers Come Up Short Against King’s

New York, NY – In a match that had eight decisions, four decided by just one point, the Hawks found themselves on the lower end of three of those matches as they just come up short 21-10, to King's College in both team's first match of the new year, Wednesday afternoon at the Hunter Sportsplex.

King's freshman Noah Blackwell got things starting today with a 9-3 decision over Hunter freshman Chris Gogatz who was making his dual meet debut.

Still competing up a weight class, senior Vitaly Simkin trailed by three points heading into the final period where he was able to earn three points of his own, but a reversal and riding time forced him to drop a 6-3 decision to Taylor Green.

Following a scoreless first period, Hunter sophomore Matt Cartusciello controlled the second and third periods with six points including 3:26 of riding time for a 6-1 decision over sophomore Jeffrey Robbins.

Trailing 6-2 with under a minute left in the third period, junior Emman Sarwari scored a reversal and a takedown to tie the match, but gave up an escape with just seconds left that resulted in a 7-6 win for King's freshman David Foley.

Junior RJ Klotz had a hard fought match in his season debut at 184 pounds after starting the year at 197, but freshman Frank Marinucci pulled out the 3-2 victory.

Making his Hunter debut, sophomore Anthony Daly found himself behind 2-0 heading into the third period, where he was able to score a takedown and then road out the final 1:14 to earn a point for 1:01 of riding time and a 3-2 victory.

Heavyweight

Junior John Humble scored five quick points in the first period and coasted to a 5-0 decision over Dan Heydebrand to put King's up 15-6.

Hunter freshman Ariel Guerrero was impressive in just his second dual match of the season, recording a 10-2 major decision on sophomore Mike Tabasco to cut the Monarchs lead to 15-10.

King's was able to clinch the victory at 133 pounds when senior Tony Miele pinned sophomore Oliver Lopez 1:06 into the match, making the team score 21-10.

Sophomore Sean Messina suffered just his fourth loss of the season, falling to senior Frank Davis 5-4.

The Hawks (1-4) will be back in action next Friday, when they travel to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to compete in the annual Bud Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College from January 15 through 16.
