Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Purchase in Season Opener

Purchase, NY – Junior Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) pitched a one run, two-hitter and led the team with four runs batted in as the Hunter softball team opened up the 2010 season with an 11-1 victory over Purchase College and then followed this up with an 11-3 win to sweep the non-conference doubleheader played in Purchase, NY on Wednesday.

Senior catcher Jacqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) drove in the team's first run of the season, with a single that started a six-run inning for the Hawks. Hunter then scored two more runs in the top of the second inning, and then took a 10-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run single from Damroth. Then after allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore third baseman Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) gave the Hawks an 11-1 lead on a one-run double.

Junior outfielder Christina Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Saviour) was the only Hawk to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and one run scored. Frank finished 1-for-3 with three runs scored and one batted in. In five innings of action, Damroth struck out nine batters, allowed one hit and one unearned run.

In the second game, the Hawks fell behind 2-1 in the first, but a three-run third inning put them up 4-2 and they then closed things out with a five run effort in the top of the seventh inning to earn the 11-3 victory. Frank went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two batted in. Junior short stop Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) had a nice outing going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Damroth closed out her day from the plate with two runs scored and two batted in while hitting 2-for-3.

In five innings of action on the mound, sophomore Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) struck out two batters and allowed three earned runs, while Damroth pitched the final two innings, striking out three batters and not allowing a hit or a run to ensure Stensland's first career victory.

The Hawks (2-0) will be back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Jersey City, NJ to face New Jersey City University (6-2) for the first time since 2005. The non-conference doubleheader is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start time at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
