Estevez’ Homer Sends Hawks Past NJCU 6-1

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

Jersey City, NJ – Sophomore outfielder Josephine Estevez (Bronx, NY/Bronx Lab) sent a shot over the fence in left-center to put the Hawks up 2-1 and would lead to the eventual 6-1 victory in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader against New Jersey City University at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in Jersey City, NJ.

The Gothic Knights struck first in the bottom half of the third inning, but in the top of the fourth with one out and a runner on first, Estevez stepped to the plate and with one shot, put the Hawks up 2-1 for her second career home run. In the top of the fifth, a botched pickoff attempt at the plate would result in two more Hunter runs. They then extended their lead to six in the top of the seventh inning with sophomore Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) and junior Christina Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Saviour) each bringing in runs.

Junior Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) had another solid outing on the mound for the Hawks, going seven innings, striking out six batters and giving up just three hits and one earned run. From the plate, she went 2-for-4 with one run scored.

The second half of the doubleheader had a much different feel as NJCU blew the game open with a 12-run bottom of the third to take a commanding 13-0 lead. However, the Hawks rallied back in the fourth inning, scoring a run and then after NJCU loaded the bases, Estevez went over the fence again to record her first career grand slam that cut the lead to eight runs. Hunter then had chances in the next two innings to get under eight runs, but couldn't get another run across the plate to avoid the eight-run mercy rule and fell in five innings.

Sophomore Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) got the start on the mound, going four innings with two strikeouts and giving up six earned runs in her first loss of the season. Junior short stop Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) went 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Zieff also had two hits in three at bats and scored one run.

Hunter (3-1) will now head down to Pomona, NJ on Tuesday to face another New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent, Richard Stockton (6-4) for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
