New York, NY – Junior
Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) pitched her second career no-hitter, going five innings and striking out 11 batters during a 12-0 victory in the first game of a CUNY Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on Randall's Island.
Sophomore catcher
Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) led the Hawks from the plate in the first game, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and one run scored. Damroth also had a nice hitting game, finishing 2-for 3 with a run scored and batted in. She improved her season record on the mound to 4-1, while freshman Racine Brown takes the loss for Lehman after striking out six batters and allowing nine earned runs in four innings.
Lehman opened the second game with a double by senior Bethany Rodriguez, who was brought home two batters later by sophomore Natalie Martinez. Hunter then tied the game in the bottom of the second innings when junior outfielder
Christina Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Saviour) doubled to bring Zieff home.
An inning later, with two runners on, senior
Jacqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) brought in both after reaching on an error by the first baseman. The Hawks added on two more runs before the end of the inning to take a 6-1 lead. Then in the top of the fourth, Frank sent a shot deep to left field that was mishandled by the outfielder and would result in three runs, including Frank who managed to get around each base before the ball came back in. Hunter controlled a 9-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth and were able to close things out for a five inning victory.
Frank would finish with a game high four runs batted in after going hitless, reaching both times on errors. Zieff once again led the Hawks in hitting, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Sophomore
Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) improved to 4-1 on the year, going five innings, striking out six batters and allowing three hits and one earned run. Martinez got the start for the Lightning, striking out one batter and giving up seven earned runs in four innings on the mound.
Hunter (8-2, 4-0 CUNYAC) will next head to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader with Wilkes University.
