Jacqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) had another monster day at the plate, hitting her fifth homer of the season after going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two scored in game one, and then in game two she went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and batted in to lead the Hawks to a sweep of John Jay 9-1 and 16-14 in a CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader held at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, NY on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore third baseman
Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) got the Hawks on the board in game one with a two-run, two out double in the bottom half of the first inning. Hunter then tacked on five more runs in the next inning with senior outfielder
Stephanie Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) bringing two runs in on a single, who came home a batter later to put the Hawks up 5-0. Then Frank sent a shot over the fence in centerfield to driving in two more runs and put her team up 7-0.
The Bloodhounds put a run on the board in the fourth inning after junior third baseman Nina Chao doubled to bring home junior catcher Christina Perez who reached on a double of her own. Frank answered back with a RBI single that brought home Alves who opened the inning by being walked. Holding an 8-1 lead after five and half innings of play, the Hawks clinched the mercy-rule victory when Zieff brought home junior short stop
Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY, Midwood) who was walked to open the inning.
Junior
Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) struck out five batters and walked one while not allowing a hit in her three innings of action to earn her sixth win of the season. Sophomore
Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) allowed three hits and one earned run in three innings of relief duty. For the Bloodhounds, junior Angela Lam is credited with the loss after going five innings, striking out one batter and allowing six earned runs. Sophomore Kim Bifulco faced the final three batters of the game, giving up an earned run in her relief effort.
Frank and Zieff led the Hawks from the plate in game one, each going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, while Alves finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and batted in.
Looking to change their fortunes from game one, the Bloodhounds grabbed an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning of game two. However, the Hawks answered right back with six runs in the bottom half of the inning, including a two-run single from junior outfielder
Christina Baker.
John Jay closed the gap in the third inning when senior outfielder Marina Gomez hit a three-run shot over the scoreboard in left field to bring the Bloodhounds within a run of the Hawks, 6-5. Hunter then took a commanding 11-5 lead in the fifth inning led by a two-run single from Frank and two-run double from Zieff. That lead would not last long as John Jay had their best inning of the day from the plate, scoring eight runs to claim a 14-11 lead.
Baker then helped the Hawks battle back in the bottom of the sixth, driving in two runs on a double. This was followed by RBIs from Stensland, sophomore outfielder
Josephine Estevez (Bronx, NY/Bronx Lab) and freshman first baseman
KayTee Bauer (Bronx, NY/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) giving Hunter a 16-14 advantage. The umpires then called the game due to darkness.
Stensland is awarded her sixth win of the season after going 3.0 innings, striking out two batters and allowing four earned runs. Chao picks up the loss after giving up four earned runs in three innings of action for the Bloodhounds.
Hunter (12-8, 6-2 CUNYAC) will now head out to Farmingdale, NY on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader with the Rams of Farmingdale State at 3:30 p.m.
