Hawks Close Out CUNYAC Play With Sweep of York

Game 1 - Box Score
Game 2 - Box Score

New York, NY – Senior outfielder Stephanie Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) went a perfect 4-for-4, scoring all four times she reached and also driving in two runs during a 14-0 victory in the second game of a CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader where the Hawks won the first game 9-1 against York College on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Randall's Island.

Alves opened the day showcasing her speed with an in the park homerun to left field. This would be the first of four runs scored in the first inning. In the bottom half of the second, junior short stop Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) tacked on two more runs with a two-run shot to left-center.

Sophomore outfielder Josephine Estevez (Bronx, NY/Bronx Lab) kept things going in the bottom of the third with a leadoff triple, and was brought home by a single from freshman first baseman KayTee Bauer (Bronx, NY/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) a batter later.

In the top of the fourth, freshman pitcher Thessaly Belizario recorded the Cardinals only hit of the game, bringing home freshman catcher Joviette Frederick who leadoff the inning with a walk. McKenna then closed things out in the bottom of the fifth with a triple that brought home freshman second baseman Molly Meehan (Pearl River, NY/Albertus Magnus) who opened the inning with a double. McKenna finished the first game hitting 2-for-3 with four runs batted in.

Junior Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) had a superb game on the mound, striking out ten batters and allowed just one hit and one run in five innings for her seventh win of the season.

In the second game, Alves was a double away from hitting the cycle, opened the game with a single, then hitting a one RBI triple in her second at bat, followed by an in the park homerun in her third trip to the plate. McKenna and Meehan each hit 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one batted in, while sophomore third baseman Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and one run scored.

Sophomore Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) pitched the first complete game shutout of her career, striking out four batters and allowing just one hit in four innings of action for her seventh win of the season.

In a change from the original schedule, the Hawks (16-14, 10-4 CUNYAC) will not be in action on Thursday as their doubleheader with Merchant Marine has been cancelled, so instead they will now return to action on Sunday, when they travel to Madison, NJ for a non-conference doubleheader with Drew University.
