Top of the Order Comes Through in 7-5 Win at Old Westbury

Old Westbury, NY – The top of the order saw success in game one of Tuesday's double header, driving in four runs during a 7-5 win, and then followed this up with a six-inning, 3-1 victory to complete the non-conference sweep at Old Westbury.

Senior outfielder Stephanie Alves (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) led off the game with a single and then was brought home two batters later by junior short stop Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead. However, that lead didn't last long as the Panthers put a run on the board in the bottom half of the inning.

Entering today as the team's top hitter, sophomore third baseman Arielle Zieff (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) started off the second inning by reaching via an error by the third baseman. Then each of the next three batters singled, including a hit by sophomore pitcher Lauren Stensland (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) that got past the second baseman to bring Zieff across the plate. This was the first of six runs the Hawks put up on the scoreboard in the inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

Old Westbury freshman Nicole Petrucci countered the Hawks efforts with a two-run double to left-center, followed by a single from freshman outfielder Alyssa Clancy that drove in another run to cut the lead to just three runs. The Panthers would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but that was as close as they got.

Stensland got the start in game one on the mound for Hunter, earning her fifth win of the season with a seven-inning complete game where she allowed four earned runs and four hits. Junior Deborah Ciccarelli dropped her seventh decision of the season after allowing five earned runs off 11 hits for the Panthers.

Alves and freshman second baseman Molly Meehan (Pearl River, NY/Albertus Magnus) led the Hawks from the plate going 2-for-4 with a run scored a batted in, while junior outfielder Christina Baker (Brooklyn, NY/St. Saviour) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) took to the mound in game two and pitched five scoreless innings before allowing a run in the bottom of the sixth which would be the final inning of the game that was called due to darkness. Damroth, who improved to 5-2 on the year, struck out five batters, while allowing just three hits and no walks in six innings. For the Panthers, Clancy struck out seven batters and had a perfect game going though three inning, but ultimately would give up two earned runs for her third loss of the year.

Scoreless through four innings, Baker looked to get things going for Hunter with a leadoff single. However, the Panthers caught big break as Damroth grounded into a double-play in the next at bat. So with two outs, Clancy walks the next batter which was then followed by a single from freshman first baseman KayTee Bauer (Bronx, NY/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy). Alves would single on the next at bat and during the play, the third baseman committed an error that allowed a runner to cross the plate and Bauer advanced to third. Meehan then reached on an error by the short stop which brought home Bauer, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Hunter added an additional run in the sixth inning with Zieff bringing in senior catcher Jacqueline Frank (Broad Channel, NY/Stella Maris) who lead off the inning with a double. Frank would finish the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, followed by Bauer with a 1-for-2 effort and Zieff drove in the team's only RBI on her only hit of the day.

The Hawks (10-4, 4-0 CUNYAC) will now prepare for a big conference matchup on Saturday, when they face Baruch College at Noon at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, NY.
