Hawks Season Comes to a Close

Staten Island, NY – After dropping a tough 7-3 game to the second-seeded College of Staten Island in the first game of the double-elimination round of the 2010 CUNY Athletic Conference softball championship tournament, the Hawks went to extra innings with John Jay College in the second game and were upset by the fourth-seeded Bloodhounds 7-5 thus bringing an early end to Hunter's season.

Junior short stop Megan McKenna got the Hawks on the board in the top of the first against Staten Island with a two-run triple to right-center and later came home on a pass ball. However, they would end up going scoreless the next six innings, while the Dolphins seven runs on the board. McKenna finished the game hitting 2-for-3, while sophomore catcher Arielle Zieff earned a hit in all three of her at bats. Junior Stephanie Damroth went all six innings on the mound for the Hawks, striking out four batters and allowing five earned runs.

In the second game, the Hawks once again grabbed three runs in the first inning, thanks to two RBI single from sophomore outfielder Josephine Estevez. John Jay answered back in the top of the second with a two-run homer from senior Marina Gomez to bring her team within a run of the Hawks. Then in the top of the fifth inning, designated player Kim Bifulco hit a two-run single to give the Bloodhounds a 4-3 lead, which they would extend to a 5-3 lead an inning later.

In need of some offense, the Hawks got more than they expect in the bottom of the sixth when Estevez stepped to the plate and sent a shot over the fence in left field to score two runs and tie the game at five a piece. John Jay threatened to break the game open in the top of the seventh with bases loaded and just one out, but Damroth was able to force a fly ball to center followed by a strikeout to end the inning.

The Hawks had a chance to get the game winner in the bottom of the seventh after junior Christina Baker doubled with one and then advanced to third a batter later, but they were not able to capitalize as John Jay forced extra innings where they scored two runs in the top half to take a 7-5 lead and then closed things out in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the upset.

In 135 games in a Hunter uniform, senior outfielder Stephanie Alves recorded 136 hits with 54 runs batted in and 99 runs scored. In addition, she stole 33-of-35 bases and has a fielding percentage of .983. The Hawks were without their other standout senior, catcher Jackie Frank, who suffered a season ending knee injury in the Hawks regular season finale. Frank closed out her Hunter career ranked fourth all-time in career home runs with 11 and in total bases with 197, while maintaining a .326 batting and .494 slugging percentage.
