Fencing Overpowered at Eric Sollee Invitational

On Sunday, February 6, the men's fencing team travelled to Cambridge, MA to compete in the Eric Sorlee Invitational. The Hawks struggled as they faced tops schools such as MIT, Boston College, Harvard, Brown, Duke and Brandies University. The men posted a 0-6 record at the all day event.

The day kicked off as the Hawks faced the Eagles of Boston College in the first round. They were unsuccessful as Junior Nial Welch was the only one able to grab a win in the epee bout. In the second round against MIT, it was a much closer match as Senior Jose Samora Jr. won all three of his bouts in foil. Junior Justin Lokossou was victorious in two of his bouts along with Nial Welch in epee. But the Hawks were unable to grab the win as they fell 10-17 to the Engineers.

With a bye in round 3, the Hawks waited to play rival Brown University.   Nial Welch was able to squeak out two wins in epee, but the Bears proved to be too strong as they overpowered the men in all three events. In the fourth round, the men took on Harvard University. The Crimsons took foil and sabre easily, but in sabre Welch was able to grab two bout wins, and Lokossou had a win as well.  Round 5 also seemed to be though on the Hawks as they fell to the Blue Devils of Duke University in all three events.   Jose Samora Jr. was able to pick up two bout wins in foil, being the only wins against the Blue Devils.

In the sixth round, the men faced the Judges of Brandeis. They were victorious in the foil event as Jose Samora Jr. won all three of his bouts and Krysztof Turula grabbed two bout wins as well. The Hawks were unsuccessful in securing wins in the epee and sabre events as they fell to the Judges.

The Hawks are back in action on February 13th, as they compete in the MACFA hosted by NJIT in Newark, New Jersey.
