New York, NY-The Hunter College softball team played their second double header of the season, squeaking out two wins against New Jersey City University at Randall's Island. After taking the first game 7-6, the women prevailed again in the second, winning 3-2.
The first game started out slow for the Hawks, as the Gothic Knights were able to grab three runs in the first inning. It was not until the third inning that the Hawks got on the board, with Megan McKenna and Julia Lipovac scoring on an error by the Gothic Knights' left fielder.
The next batter, freshman Angel Iacovetti added to the Hawks run total, connecting for the second homer of her collegiate career, driving in Arielle Zieff to score Hunter's fourth run. Senior Chrissy Baker followed the trend with an RBI double, scoring Molly Meehan to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.
The Gothic Knights retook the lead in the fifth, taking advantage of two Hawks errors, bringing the score to 6-5.
However, the Hawks came back strong in the bottom of the inning. Zieff got Hunter started with a single to left field. The next batter, Iacovetti reached second base on a error by the Gothic Knights, putting runners on second and third with no outs. From there the Hawks took advantage of a passed ball to plate the tying and go ahead runs, bringing the score to 7-6, the final.
In the second game, the Gothic Knights got on the board early, plating a run in the first inning off of Hawks' starter, Iacovetti. It did not take the Hawks long to take the lead, however. Zieff singled to left field, before advancing to second when Meehan singled to left field. Zieff then stole third on a wild pitch, as Baker singled to right field clearing Zieff to score the first run. Meehan was able score the second run on a wild pitch, giving the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
The Gothic Knights tied the gamee with a run in the third. It was not until the sixth inning that the Hawks scored again, as Baker flied out to center field, allowing Iacovetti to score the winning run for a 3-2 walk-off victory.
The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, March 22nd when they travel to Newark, New Jersey to play Rutgers-Newark.
