Newark, NJ – On Tuesday, March 22, the women's softball team headed across the Hudson for a double header against the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark. The Hawk bats were on fire as they hammered out nine hits in each game while hurlers Angel Iacovetti and Amanda Annicaro fared well on the mound. Hunter prevailed in both games, 6-1 and 8-5 to advance their record to 4-1-1 while the Scarlet Raiders drop to 3-6 on the year.
In the first game, the Hawks got on the board first as CUNYAC Player of the Week, freshman Julia Lipovac singled through the left side to notch the first of her three hits in the game. Following her, senior Megan McKenna reached on an error by shortstop Tori Sovak and then advanced on a bad throw. A balk by pitcher Angela Riscinti allowed Lipovac to score the game's first run. Arielle Zieff grounded to third but drove McKenna home as the Hawks would take an early 2-0 lead.
In the second, Josephine Estevez singled to right center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A two out rally ensued, sparked by another error by Sovak allowing Crissette Maxwell to reach second, scoring Estevez. Lipovac then hit a triple to right center to send Crissette across the plate, making it a 4-0 game. McKenna reached on a walk but was caught stealing to end the inning.
Jessica Zelaya led off the bottom of the third with a base hit and scored on a Gabby Spinella single down the left field line, putting the Scarlet Raiders on the board and closing the gap. However, it would be the only run they would score the rest of the game as the Hawks tacked on another two in the top of the fifth on a homerun by Lipovac and a throwing error to score McKenna, putting the game out of reach 6-1.
Iacovetti recorded the complete game, giving up just one earned run, walking two and fanning five in the win, moving her record to 2-0.
In the second game, the Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead again, kicking off the game with a triple by Lipovac. She scored as McKenna reached second on an error by the center fielder. Zieff drove in her teammate for the second and final run of the inning on a single to left field.
It was not until the bottom of the third when Rutgers-Newark responded with a three run, four hit inning to take their first lead of the double header. Hunter came right back in the top of the fourth as Sophia Ponce doubled and then scored on a fielding error to knot the game at three. KayTee Bauer then scored on yet another opposition error to retake the lead 4-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rutgers-Newark was able to score two runs on two hits to go ahead 5-4. In the top of the fifth, McKenna led off with a triple. Zieff sac flied to center scoring McKenna and recording her second RBI of the game and tying the game at four apiece.
After a scoreless sixth, the Hawks had a big inning as they scored three runs on four hits to go ahead 8-5. Iacovetti closed out the game with a one-two-three seventh to secure the Hawk's fourth win of the season.
Hunter is back in action on Friday, March 25 when they travel to Brooklyn, New York to take on the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in their first conference contest of the season. The first game of the double header is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
