Little Falls, NJ – On Tuesday, March 29, the softball team took on the Red Hawks of Montclair State University in a double header. A pitcher's duel between CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week, freshman Angel Iacovetti, and Alex Hill of the Red Hawks highlighted the first game as they each posted zeros across the board until the bottom of the ninth when Montclair squeaked out a run to take the first game. The Hawks, in the second game, fell behind early and could not get a rally going as they scored just two runs compared to their opponent's six. With the loss, Hunter moves to 5-3-2 while Montclair advances to 8-4.

Game 1

After exchanging a quick one-two-three first inning, Monclair threatened to break open the game as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with just one out. Shortstop Megan McKenna fielded a groundball and fired it home to catcher Arielle Zieff who laid down the tag on Dana Amato just in time to keep the Red Hawks scoreless. Molly Meehan recorded the final out to end the scoring threat.

From the third inning through the seventh, each team managed to get just one hit, forcing the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, with the tiebreaker rule in effect, Meehan advanced to third on a sac bunt by Christina Baker, but the Hawks were not able to drive her in. Montclair advanced a runner to third on a wild pitch, but she would get no further as Katie Muglia popped up to second, ending the inning.

The Hawks were halted in the ninth, and Montlair took bat with Muglia on second who advanced to third on a sac bunt. A single by Amato drove her teammate in to end the game 1-0.

Iacovetti was impressive on the mound for the Hawks, going 8.1 innings and giving up just four hits, two walks and fanning seven. Zieff and McKenna were the only Hawks to hit safely in the nine inning game.

Game 2

Monclair kicked off the bottom of the first with two runs on three hits, and then struck again in the third scoring another two runs on three more hits. It was not until the sixth when the Hawks got on the board, started by McKenna reaching on an error. She was driven home on a double by Zieff to score their first run of the twinbill. Nicole Bianco pinch ran for Zieff and scored on a single by Iacovetti, but it's as far as they would get.

The Red Hawks tacked on another two runs in the bottom of the sixth and Hunter could not respond, falling by a score of 6-2.

Julia Lipovac, Zieff, Iacovetti and Sophia Ponce recorded the only hits for the Hawks while hurler Amanda Annicaro gave up four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work in the loss. Iacovetti appeared for 3.2 innings and struck out three and gave up two runs on three hits.

The Hawks are back in action today when they travel to the Bronx to take on Lehman College in a conference double header beginning at 5:00 pm.
