Freshmen Hurlers Hold City Tech to Two Hits in Twinbill Wins

Box Score – Game 2

Brooklyn, NY – Yesterday, the softball team took on the Yellow Jackets of City Tech in a double header conference contest. The Hawks came out very strong in game one, opening the first inning with nine runs and then tacking on another run in the bottom of the fourth, taking the first game with ease by a score of 10-0. Game two panned out similarly, but with a nine run second inning and scoring another run in the fourth to take the second game by the same score. With the wins, Hunter moves to 14-8-2, 8-1-1 CUNYAC while City Tech continues to search for their first win.

Game 1

Crissette Maxwell led off the first with a double and scored on a Julia Lipovac double to get the Hawks on the board early on. Back to back walks by Sophia Ponce and Angel Iacovetti loaded the bases with one out and Josephine Estevez up at the plate. Another walk drove in Lipovac making it a 2-0 game with the bases still juiced.

Back to back doubles by Christina Baker and Molly Meehan made it a 6-0 game, still with only one out. The Hawks batted around the order after a KayTee Bauer walk brought Maxwell back up to the plate. Meehan would eventually score on a wild pitch while Lipovac connected on her second hit of the inning only to be followed up by yet another double, this time off the bat of Megan McKenna. The inning would end after a nine-run rout, giving Hunter plenty of cushion for the remainder of the game.

With bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Shamel Jaime, who came in at left field for Baker, reached on a walk that scored Rachely Soto, tacking on their tenth run.

Iacovetti hurled a one hitter and fanned eleven en route to her eighth win of the season.

Game 2

Like the first game, the Hawks put together a nine-run inning, but this time it came in the second inning. Yellow Jacket pitcher Genesis Tavarez had a hard time finding the strike zone and walked the first seven of eight batters, resulting in five Hunter runs. With three runners on, McKenna smacked a bases clearing double to make it an 8-0 game. After another walk and hit, the Hawks scored one more before being thrown out attempting to steal, ending the nine run, three hit inning.

In the fourth, Lipovac doubled and advanced to third on a fly ball from McKenna. Soto singled to drive in her teammate as the Hawks would make it yet another 10-0 game in the twinbill.

Amanda Annicaro tossed a one hitter while striking out four to earn her sixth save of the year.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow, April 20 when they travel up to Purchase, New York for a double header against the Valiants of Manhattanville College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3pm.
