New York, NY – On Tuesday, April 26, the softball team took on the Bloodhounds of John Jay in their final conference contest of the regular season. In the first game, the Hawks scored eight runs on eight hits and held their counterparts to just one run on two hits to take the win. In the second game, Hunter ripped off 10 runs on 12 hits while shutting out the Bloodhounds to sweep the twinbill. The two wins advances the Hawks to 19-11-2, 10-3-1 CUNYAC while John Jay drops to 11-17, 6-8 in conference play.
Game 1
The Bloodhound's Krystal Class got her team on the scoreboard early on in the bottom of the first as she took hurler Angel Iacovetti deep for a home run, giving her team a 1-0 lead. The Hawks evened the playing field in the top of the third as Molly Meehan walked and advanced to third on a sac bunt and ground out, eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
The team then took the lead in the top of the fourth as Sophia Ponce reached on an error and was driven home on a triple by catcher Arielle Zieff. Iacovetti doubled to score Zieff and then Jennifer Gueits pinch ran and scored on another wild pitch for the third and final run of the inning, making it a 4-1 game.
They furthered their lead in the top of the seventh as freshman Julia Lipovac smacked a two RBI double. Ponce went yard on Bloodhound pitcher Angela Lam, tacking on another two runs. John Jay would not be able to come back from the deficit as the game would end 8-1 in favor of the Hawks.
Iacovetti pitched a complete game, giving up just two hits and one run while fanning 15 in the process, earning the win and advancing her record to 11-6.
Game 2
Both teams remained scoreless through two innings, but the Hawks broke the game open in the top of the third, opening up with back to back singles. A wild pitch scored Crisette Maxwell and a throwing error by the catcher scored two more runs, making it 3-0 with just one out. Zieff doubled and was driven home by Josephine Estevez for the final run of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Maxwell stepped up to the plate with two on and none out and took Lam deep for a three RBI home run. They continued their assault in the following inning, putting three more runs on the board off of three hits to end the game in five innings, 10-0.
Amanda Annicaro went the full five innings for the Hawks, allowing just two hits, not allowing a run and walking just one batter to earn her eighth win of the season.
Hunter is back in action today as they take on the Rangers of Drew University in Madison, NJ at 4:30 pm.
