Old Westbury, NY-- The Hunter College softball team advanced past the first round of the ECAC Division III Championships, defeating SUNY Old Westbury 2-1, on Wednesday, May 11.
The Hawks struck first in the contest, plating the game's first run in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Sophia Ponce got Hunter started with a triple to right field. She would come around to score one batter later on an error by the Panther's third basemen, Lauren Isaac, to give the Hawks the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers would respond in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Samantha Howley walked. The next batter, Samantha Sieger tied the game with a triple to right center.
A half inning later the Hawks retook the lead, this time for good. Angel Iacovetti led off the inning, reaching first on an error by the Panther's shortstop. With Shamel Jaime pinch running for Iacovetti at first, Christina Baker laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Jaime to second, setting up Crissette Maxwell to drive in the go-ahead run, which she did with a single through the right side to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead.
Hawks' starter, Iacovetti, earned the win in the complete game victory to bring her season record to 12-9.
The Hawks will return to action for the second round of the tournament on Saturday, May 14, when they take on the No. 2 seed, Mount Saint Mary College at 10am.
The Hawks faced Mount Saint Mary College one other time this season, when they faced them in their season opener, losing 10-2 in the first contest, before ending in a 6-6 tie in game two.
