Softball Comes to an End With Losses to Mount Saint Mary and Ramapo

Box Score - Mount Saint Mary
Box Score - Ramapo

Stockton, NJ - On Saturday, May 14, the softball team entered into the second day of action of the ECAC Tournament after defeating SUNY Old Westbury in the first round. In the first game, the Hawks took on Mount Saint Mary. Both teams put up zeros across the board until the bottom of the sixth when the Knights managed to score the eventual game winning run and winning 1-0, forcing Hunter into a must win situation as they then went on to play Ramapo. The Roadrunners were too strong and put up seven runs by the third inning while going on to score two more, eventually coming out on top, 9-1, ending the Hawks' season.

Game 1
The Hawks put themselves in scoring position in the top of the third after a leadoff single by Angel Iacovetti. Samantha Goon subbed in to pinch run, advanced to second on a Christina Baker ground out, and then moved to third on a wild pitch with one out. However, it was as far as she would get with her teammates unable to drive her home.

The Hawks managed to get a runner on third in the fourth and fifth innings as well, but simply could not manage to score a run. In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights put runners on first and second off of a leadoff single and walk with none out. A ground out advanced the runners to second and third and an ensuing walk loaded the bases. In a rare instance, Iacovetti walked the next batter allowing MSM to take a 1-0 lead

With their final chance at the plate, Josephine Estevez ripped a triple  to center field, giving her team an excellent chance at getting that run back. Unfortunately, the next three at bats ended in two pop ups and a line out, ultimately, ending the game.

Iacovetti tossed six innings, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out six.  At the plate, her and Estevez each went 2-3 while freshman Julia Lipovac provided the only other hit for the Hawks in a 1-3 effort.

Game 2

For the second time this season the Hawks pitching staff had a difficult time handling the Ramapo offense. In an encounter earlier in the season, Ramapo made quick work of the Hawks taking both games of the double header by scores of 9-0 and 11-1.

Saturday would not be much different, as Ramapo quickly got to Hawks' starting pitcher, Amanda Annicaro for two runs in the first inning.

From there Ramapo did not let up, scoring five more runs in the second before Iacovetti came on in relief of Annicaro with no outs in the inning. Iacovetti was able to stop the damage, getting through the rest of the frame without allowing another run.

The Hawks would get one of the runs back the following inning. With one out Crissette Maxwell walked. After Molly Meehan reached on an error, Lipovac singled to bring in the Hawks only run of the game.

Ramapo would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 9-1, which would be the final.

Annicaro was credited with the loss to finish the season with an overall record of 10-5. In one inning of work she gave up seven runs, only four of which were earned, on seven hits.

With the two losses the Hawks end their season with a record of 22-16-2.
