Hawks Wrap up Army Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Hunter College men's and women's fencing programs competed in the Army Invitational this past weekend where the men finished the tournament 0-4 and the women were 1-4 in action on Saturday, January 21.

Women:
Hunter College 18, Cleveland State University 9
The Hawks topped the CSU Vikings 18-9. Hunter took the epee 6-3 and then grabbed a narrow 5-4 win in the foil as Irene Yenko and Natalia Dittren won three and two bouts respectively. The Hawks dominated in the Sabre, taking the division 7-2 as Jillian Melnick, Adithi Mohan and Monica Yuen all registered victories.

Lafayette College 19, Hunter College 8
The Hawks didn't fare as well as against the Leopards, falling 19-8. Lafayette narrowly edged Hunter in the epee division, 5-4 as Samantha Li won three bouts and Wendy Mak won one. Hunter suffered yet another one-point loss in the sabre as Melnick won three bouts and Yuen won one in a 5-4 loss to the Leopards. The Hawks were dominated in the 9-0 in the foil as they were unable to score a point against Lafayette in the loss.

University of Detroit Mercy 14, Hunter College 13
Hunter suffered a heartbreaking 14-13 loss against the Titans. After besting UDM 6-3 in the foil the Titans bounced back to take the next two division and win the round. The foil featured individual victories for Li (two), Mak (three) and Cetoute (one). The Titans then prevailed 5-4 in the foil as Hunter was forced to forfeit three bouts while Yenko won three bouts and Dittren won one. UDM got the best of the Hawks in the sabre, taking the division 6-3 as Melnick won a pair of bouts and Yuen won one.

Stevens Tech 21, Hunter College 6
The Hawks had a rough go of things against the Ducks as Stevens Tech prevailed over Hunter, 21-6. The Hawks managed to win just three bouts in the epee as Stevens claimed a 6-3 win in the division with Mak registering two and Li winning one. Yenko was the only Hawk to win a bout in the foil division, giving Stevens the 8-1 win in that round. Finally, the Ducks closed out the sabre with a 7-2 victory which saw Melnick win both bouts.

Men:
Cleveland State University 18, Hunter College 9
Hunter was bested by the Cleveland State Vikings 18-9. The Hawks took the epee by a score of 6-3 as Justin Lokossou, Alex Sosa and Hunter Lackowitz each won two bouts apiece to guide the Hawks to victory. The Hawks managed to win just one bout in the sabre as David Prashar registered in the 8-1 defeat. Hunter fell 7-2 in the foil as Nick Burney won both bouts.  

Army 22, Hunter College 5
Host school Army got past Hunter 22-5. In the Epee, Hunter lost 7-2 after Sosa and Lokossou each one a bout. The Hawks fell by the same score in the foil with Burney registering two victories in three of his bouts. The Black Knights closed the match with an 8-1 win in the sabre, Alexis Chavez provided the lone win for the Hawks.

Lafayette College 25, Hunter College 2
The Hawks lost to Lafayette College 25-2. Hunter was shut out in the epee, losing 9-0 before falling 8-1 in both the foil and sabre divisions. Chavez earned the lone win in the sabre while Burney won a bout in the foil.

University of Detroit Mercy 16, Hunter College 11
Hunter topped UDM in the sabre, 6-3 as Sandh won a bout, Chavez won three and Prashar won two to help the Hawks win the division. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Titans rebounded to take the epee, 6-3 and foil, 7-2. In the epee both Lackowitz, Sosa and Lokossou won individual bouts. The foil saw Burney and Joanis win bouts in the defeat.

The men's fencing team returns to action on Sunday, January 29 when they head to Stevens Tech to compete in a MACFA event.
