Hawks Dethrone Monarchs in 32-11 Victory

NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College wrestling team dominated early and often as it defeated the visiting King's College Monarchs, 32-11 at the Hunter Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon.

The victory improves Hunter's record to 10-7 while the Monarchs drop to 6-14.

The Hawks won all but three matches to take down the Monarchs as they head into the homestretch. Aaron Perez nabbed an early 7-4 victory over Oliver Lopez at 125 pounds but Hunter would win the next five.

Ryan Gerondal won a 14-4 major decision over Travis Boardman at 133 pounds and then Sean Messina wasted little time, pinning Nathanial Seals at 141 pounds in 1:27 to keep the Hawks rolling.

Following a forfeit victory to Brady Kwong at 149, Chris Gogatz earned a major decision win over Gordon Custer at 157, beating the Monarch, 12-4.

Another Monarch forfeit came at 165 pounds as Jesse Bader earned the victory then the Monarchs battled back claiming the next two matches as Shane Stark knocked off Luke Pragdat, 6-2 at 174. Then, the #7 DIII wrestler in the country, Mike Reilly earned a 19-4 technical fall victory over Jordan Donahue at 184 pounds.

That would cap the Monarchs scoring efforts on the day though, as Alan Djokic, wrestling at 197 pounds defeated Cemah Tudae-Torboh, 7-0 to make it a 29-11 match in favor of the Hawks.

Then in a thrilling finale at 285 pounds, Leon Bodden battled back to defeat Peter Dwyer, 6-4 in overtime.

Hunter will host Delaware Valley College next Friday, February 17th at 6pm. The Hawks will honor five seniors prior to the game in Ryan Baxter, Matt Cartusciello, Christopher Gross, Oliver Lopez and Sean Messina.
