WALTHAM, MA – The Hunter College men's and women's fencing teams competed at the prestigious Eric Sollee Invitational this past weekend hosted by Brandeis University. On the women's side,
Jillian Melnick was exceptional for the Hawks, winning an impressive 10 bouts on the day while
Justin Lokossou won four bouts to lead the men.
Women:
MIT 23, Hunter 4
The Hawks only won two bouts in the sabre against MIT as the Beavers captured a 7-2 win in the round with
Monica Yuen and Melnick earning those victories.
Natalia Dittren and
Canny Fung each won a bout in the foil and epee respectively to round out the Hawks' scoring efforts.
Boston College 22, Hunter 5
Melnick and Yuen also won a bout each against the Eagles as BC took the sabre division 7-2. In a 7-2 foil loss, Dittren was the lone Hawk on the board in the foil, winning a pair of bouts. Finally, Fung defeated her opponent 5-4 to give the Hawks a win in the epee.
Brown 20, Hunter 7
Hunter notched an impressive 6-3 win over the Bears in the sabre. Melnick had a strong showing, winning three of her bouts while Yuen won two and Mohan won one to help the Hawks win. The Hawks only managed to claim one bout in the epee with
Kristie Cetoute earning the lone victory in a 8-1 loss. Hunter was kept off the board in the foil, as Brown took the round, 9-0.
Tufts 19, Hunter 8
Hunter suffered a tough 5-4 loss in the foil as
Irene Yenko and Dittren each won a pair of bouts in the defeat.
Wendy Mak and Fung each claimed a bout in the epee as the Jumbos took the round 7-2. Finally, Melnick won two bouts to help the Hawks' cause.
Brandeis 19, Hunter 8
Brandeis claimed a 6-3 win in the sabre as Melnick picked up a pair of bouts and Yuen took the third. The Hawks were much stronger in the foil, falling 5-4 with Yenko and Dittren each winning two bouts apiece. The host institution used a dominant performance in the epee to pull away, taking the round 8-1 as Mak won the lone bout for the Hawks.
Men:
MIT 26, Hunter 1
Despite falling to the Beavers 9-0 in the foil and sabre,
Alex Sosa got the Hawks on board with a bout win in the epee.
Brown 26, Hunter 1
The Hawks got on board in the epee thanks to
Justin Lokossou who won his final bout 3-2 to earn Hunter a win in the round.
Brandeis 25, Hunter 2
Lokossou won a pair of bouts in the epee to make it a 7-2 affair in favor of Brandeis.
Boston College 22, Hunter 5
Nicholas Burney and
Christopher Khan each recorded a win in the foil in a 7-2 loss to the Eagles. Hunter was most dominant in the epee where
Hunter Lackowitz picked up a win to go along with Lokossou's victory accounted for Hunter's final points in a 6-3 defeat.
Hunter returns to the strips next Sunday, February 12 when the Hawks head to Drew University. The women are slated to compete in the EWFC duals while the men will compete in the MACFA event.
