JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Hunter College softball took down the Gothic Knights, 6-4 in game one before using an outstanding comeback effort to beat NJCU, 12-9 in the second game on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, The Gothic Knights (4-6) took an early 2-0 lead in the home half of the first as a two-RBI single put NJCU in front.
Hunter (3-3) battled back in the second inning when pitcher Angel Iacovetti helped her own cause, drilling a three-run homer as Josephine Estevez led off the frame with a walk and Arielle Zieff notched a double to get on base, giving Hunter a 3-2 advantage.
NJCU tied the game in the bottom of the second though, scoring on a RBI-groundout to make it 3-3.
The Hawks broke a three-inning scoring drought atop the sixth when Zieff clubbed a RBI-single and Iacovetti drove in two more runs on a single to center, putting Hunter ahead 6-3.
NJCU tallied a run in the home half of the seventh on a RBI-double to left center but would manage no more as Hunter took the first game, 6-4.
Iacovetti—reigning CUNYAC pitcher of the week, finished a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in five runs in the winning effort. In the circle, Iacovetti (2-1) lasted the full seven innings, surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out seven.
Game two proved more to be a slugfest as the teams traded runs but at the end of the day, the Hawks took advantage of poor defensive play by the Gothic Knights scoring eight runs on five hits and as many errors—all with two outs, atop the seventh to take the 12-9 victory.
NJCU got off to a much quicker start offensively in game two, scoring four runs in the first frame.
Following a full scoreless inning, the Hawks generated a slew of offense atop the third thanks to timely hitting. Meghan O'Shea, Briana Kresback and Crissette Maxwell each singled to load the bases before Molly Meehan's RBI single drove in a run and kept the bases chugged. Mucerino walked in a run next as Julia Lipovac's patience at the plate was rewarded with the Hawks' second RBI of the frame. With two outs, Sophia Ponce came up with a clutch 2-RBI single, plating both Lipovac and Meehan to make it a 4-4 affair.
A home run in the bottom of the fourth gave NJCU a 5-4 lead before the Gothic Knights added four more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 9-4 lead.
The Hawks capitalized on NJCU miscues as the seventh was highlighted by a grand slam home run from Ponce and RBI singles from Meehan and Maxwell while the two other runs were scored on errors.
Lauren Stensland (1-1) who worked two frames to earn the win for the Hawks, sat the Gothic Knights down in order in the home half of the seventh to secure the 12-9 victory.
Ponce finished the day 2-for-4 with a game-high six RBI.
Hunter heads to Richard Stockton on Tuesday, March 20 for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3pm.
