MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Hunter College softball team struggled to score runs this afternoon as Montclair State topped the Hawks 2-0 and 6-2 in a double-dip this afternoon.
Hunter (5-9) managed just four hits in game one and tallied six in game two to match Montclair State's hit column (16-1) but failed to score as the Red Hawks grabbed a pair of wins.
In game one, catcher
Sophia Ponce kept her six-game hit streak alive as she went 2-for-4 while
Crissette Maxwell and
Briana Kresback each managed a hit each in the loss.
Montclair State scored a run in the first inning when an illegal pitch enabled the leadoff batter to score after reaching on a single.
The Red Hawks added another run—unearned, in the fourth inning after a batter reached on an error and then was sent home on a two-out RBI double to put Montclair State up 2-0.
The Hawks were held hitless across the next four innings as Montclair held on for the victory.
Angel Iacovetti (3-5) suffered the loss, working six innings and allowing an earned run on four hits. Hill (9-0) earned the win for Montclair State, surrendering just four hits and striking out 12 in seven innings.
Game two saw Hunter finish with six hits and two runs as third baseman
Kristen McGoldrick finished with two hits in three plate appearances.
Hunter trailed 2-0 after Montclair State scored a pair of runs in the home half of the first inning. Hunter got a run back in the top of the second when
Julia Lipovac reached on a fielder's choice and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1 with the Red Hawks still in front.
Montclair State widened its lead in the bottom of the third, plating three runs on a wild pitch and an error to move ahead, 5-1. The Red Hawks added another run in the sixth on a wild pitch to make it 6-1.
The Hawks got a run back in the seventh on a
KayTee Bauer sac-RBI to plate Lipovac who singled earlier in the frame but could manage nothing further, dropping the night cap 6-2.
Lauren Stensland (1-3) took the loss in 2.2 innings of work, giving up five runs--three earned on four hits. Miller earned the Red Hawk victory.
Hunter returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 28 as it hosts Lehman at 3:30pm. The game will be played at Randall's Island field #12.
