BOXSCORE - Game Two

NEW YORK, NY –
The Hunter College softball team snapped a six-game losing streak as it defeated the visiting John Jay Bloodhounds, 3-0 in game one and then used a thrilling comeback to top John Jay, 10-9 in a nine inning extravaganza at Randall's Island on Tuesday afternoon.

Angel Iacovetti (8-10) scattered four hits and fanned eight batters to earn the shutout victory.

Hunter got RBI singles from Briana Kresback, Julia Lipovac and Molly Meehan as the top of the order collaborated to produce all of today's runs.

The Hawks improve to 13-19 overall and 9-3 in the CUNYAC. John Jay drops to 7-21 overall and 2-8 in the conference.

Hunter waited until the fourth inning to strike as Sophia Ponce drew a one-out walk to get on base before stealing second and scoring on Meehan's RBI single to center, putting the home team in front by one (1-0).

The Hawks added two more runs in the fifth as Meghan O'Shea led off with a single to left. Iacovetti followed with a shot to center and then Shamel Jaime executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Kresback singled home O'Shea and then on the following play, Lipovac drove in Nicole Bianco (who pinch ran for Iacovetti) to make it 3-0 Hunter.

The Bloodhounds failed to retaliate despite getting a pair on board in the sixth, Iacovetti and the Hawks shut down any offensive threat.

In game two, leadoff hitter Kresback went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored to lead the Hawks. Ponce and Meehan each finished 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Josephine Estevez tallied two RBI on three hits in the offensive explosion.

Hunter scored two runs in the first frame to take a quick lead but John Jay responded with a pair of four-run innings in the second and third to make it an 8-2 game.

The Hawks began clawing back immediately, scoring a run in the third and then adding four more in the fourth to make it 8-7 Bloodhounds.

The teams traded runs in the fifth and a scoreless sixth inning paved the way for a dramatic finish. With Hunter down to its final out and Kresback on second after stealing a base, Ponce delivered in the clutch with a RBI single plating the run to tie the game up and force extra innings (9-9).

Neither team scored in the eighth inning and Amanda Annicaro kept the Bloodhounds off the board in the ninth, setting the stage for a walk off Hawk victory. With Shamel Jaime on second pace per the international tiebreaker rule, Kresback exectured a sacrifice bunt to perfection moving Jaime to third. Lipovac delivered the winning RBI on a single through the left to plate the run and give Hunter the 10-9 victory.

Amanda Annicaro (4-4) worked 6.2 frames, in relief of Lauren Stensland to earn the victory. She scattered four hits and allowed just one run while striking out five.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow, April 18 in a doubleheader against Manhattanville at 3:00pm.
