NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game but ultimately fell to Manhattanville, 5-4 in eight innings at Randall's Island on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks were not as fortunate in game two, dropping the contest, 10-2 against the Valiants.
The Hawks fall to 13-21 while Manhattanville improves to 14-13 on the year.
Freshman
Meghan O'Shea was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while
Sophia Ponce and Briana Kresbach each drove in a run.
Amanda Annicaro dropped the decision, surrendering five runs on eight hits in a season-high eight innings pitched.
The Valiants plated a run in the first and sixth innings to move ahead, 2-0.
Hunter waited until the seventh inning to knot the game up at 2-2, doing so on O'Shea's one-out single which drove in
Josephine Estevez and
Arielle Zieff who doubled to put a pair on.
Manhattanville used a pair of homers in the eighth--a two run and a solo shot, to jump ahead, 5-2.
The Hawks got two runs back in the home half but the comeback effort fell short as Kresback's RBI groundout and Ponce's RBI double accounted for the only runs in the stanza.
Game two saw
Molly Meehan and
Julia Lipovac each finish with two hits to pace the club while Lipovac also drove in both runs.
Annicaro (4-6) also suffered the loss in game two, allowing 10 runs (only four earned) on as many hits in six innings pitched.
Back-to-back four-run innings from the Valiants in the first and second innings put Hunter down, 8-0 early.
The Hawks scored two in the bottom of the fourth as Lipovac registered a two RBI double to make it, 8-2 Manhattanville.
Despite holding the Valiants scoreless in the fifth, Manhatanville scored two more runs atop the sixth to make it a 10-2 ballgame.
Hunter returns to the diamond on Friday, April 20 as it host Old Westbury in a doubleheader slated to start at 3:00pm.
