NEW YORK, NY - Senior
Josephine Estevez went yard once in the first game of today's doubleheader against Drew University and then homered twice in game two, helping the Hawks to a 8-3 victory over the Rangers on Senior Day at Randall's Island on Wednesday evening. The Rangers defeated Hunter, 6-1 in game one.
Hunter improves to 14-24 on the season while Drew moves to 14-18 on the year.
The Hawks ackonwledged four seniors prior to the start of today's game, including Estevez, Hunter paid tribute to
Crissette Maxwell,
Lauren Stensland and
Arielle Zieff who all started in today's first game.
Estevez led the charge in game two, driving in four runs on two homers while
Sophia Ponce belted a pair of singles in the winning effort.
Despite giving up three early runs to Drew in the seecond inning, Hunter kept its composure and hit the Rangers up for five of their own in the bottom of the third.
Julia Lipovac got things started with a home run of her on--a solo shot and her second of the season to get the Hawks on board. From there, a two out rally saw
Molly Meehan plate Maxwell on a RBI double before a three-run shot from Estevez put Hunter ahead, 5-3.
With
Angel Iacovetti (9-11) holding the Rangers scoreless, the Hawks got back to business in the bottom of the fourth, adding two more runs on RBI singles from
Briana Kresback and Maxwell to make it a 7-3 ballgame.
Hunter added its final run in the fifth as Estevez belted her third home run of the day-a solo shot to put Hunter up, 8-3.
Iacovetti went the distance, throwing six innings while surrendering just three runs on six scattered hits, tallying three strikeouts.
Hunter dropped the first game, 6-1. Along with Estevez' homer,
KayTee Bauer registered a single to help the Hawks in a game which saw Hunter struggle at the plate.
After surrendering two runs in the first inning, Stensland (1-7) did a good job holding the Rangers scoreless across the next three frames.
Estevez launched a home run in the home half of the second--just her first all season to bring the Hawks within one (2-1).
The Rangers offense exploded in the fifth frame as Drew added three runs to extend its lead to 5-1.
Drew scored its final run in the sixth to make it a 6-1 ballgame.
Stensland had her longest outing of the season, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on six scattered hits to take the loss.
Hunter travels to Scranton, PA on Monday, April 30th to close out the regular season as it takes on Scranton at 4pm.
