NEW YORK, NY – The visiting Moravian College softball team took advantage of six errors and kept the Hunter hitters off balance as they prevailed in 7-1 and 13-0 (6 inn.) decisions at Randall's Island on Tuesday evening.
In game one with Hunter trailing 7-0,
Sophia Ponce managed the lone RBI as she stroked a double to the outfield in the home half of the sixth to plate
Crissette Maxwell who opened the frame with a sharp single up the middle but the damage had already been done. Moravian held the Hawks scoreless in the final frame to take the 7-1 victory.
Angel Iacovetti (4-6) struggled in the outing, giving up seven runs on 11 hits while striking out five to suffer the loss.
Game two appeared to start on a better note as the Hawks held the Greyhounds off the scoreboard in the first inning.
Unfortunately, sloppy defensive play atop the second stanza saw Moravian plate three runs on just one hit and two Hunter errors to take a 3-0 lead.
Hunter struggled to find its groove offensively but again kept the Greyhounds at bay in the third and fourth innings until four big hits in the fifth translated to three more Moravian runs, putting the Greyhounds ahead, 6-0.
Moravian capitalized on three Hunter miscues in the top of the sixth and collected seven hits to score seven runs—all unearned and with two outs to account for the 13-0 final.
Amanda Annicaro (2-3) surrendered just three earned runs (13 total) on 14 hits while striking out one in six innings of work.
The Hawks return to work immediately as they host Brooklyn College at Randall's Island in a doubleheader tomorrow, Wednesday, April 4 at 3:30pm.
