BOXSCORE - Game Two
NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter College softball team suffered its first setback in the CUNY Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon as it dropped a 9-1 decision against the College of Staten Island Dolphins in game one but rebounded for a thrilling 11-10 extra inning win in game two at Randall's Island.
Hunter is now 11-13 on the year and 7-1 in the conference while CSI is 6-10 overall and 5-1 in the CUNYAC.
The Hawks struggled to string together hits as
Josephine Estevez finished with a pair of base knocks and
Crissette Maxwell tripled and drove in a run to lead Hunter.
Game one was uncharacteristically quiet for the Hawks who saw CSI score three runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead.
Hunter's lone run of the contest came in the bottom of the third when Maxwell lofted a RBI triple to the outfield to plate
KayTee Bauer who singled earlier in the frame, making it 3-1 in the Dolphin's favor.
CSI would tally solo runs in the foruth and sixth innings before breaking the game wide open atop the seventh with a four-run stanza to close out the 9-1 victory.
Angel Iacovetti took the loss after surrendering eight earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings of work.
Game two saw CSI take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning but Hunter quickly responded by plating six runs in the home half of the frame. A single from
Julia Lipovac followed by four straight walks issued to
Kristen McGoldrick,
Meghan O'Shea, Bauer and Maxwell resulted in two runs crossing the plate. A sac-fly RBI from
Briana Kresback plated another before
Sophia Ponce drove in two on a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 6-2 Hunter.
Staten Island pulled within one just a half an inning later as it scored three runs in the third to make it 6-5 with the Hawks still ahead.
The fourth saw Hunter plate another run to make it a two-run ballgame (7-5) as Lipovac was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to earn the easy RBI.
The Dolphins tied the game in the seventh at 7-7, using bases loaded RBI singles to do the damage and force the game into extra innings.
The eighth inning went by without event but CSI struck first plating a run in the ninth to go ahead, 10-9.
Fortunately, Hunter retaliated in the home half and got a RBI double off the bat off McGoldrick before taking advantage of back-to-back errors from the Dolphin shortstop to plate the go ahead run and win, 11-10.
Iacovetti (7-7) earned the victory from the bullpen, tossing three innings in which she struck out three and surrendered an earned run on three scattered hits.
The Hawks return to the diamond on Thursday when they travel to Ramapo, New Jersey for a doubleheader against the Roadrunners scheduled to start at 3pm.
