Staten Island, NY - Hunter and Staten Island battled into extra innings, but the Dolphins scored two runs in the tenth inning for a 9-8 victory, winning the 2013 CUNYAC Softball Championships. The Hawks were the #4 seed and made it to the championship game against the #2 seeded Dolphins of Staten Island.
In an amazing championship game, the Hawks had 12 hits led by
Meghan O'Shea's team-high three hits while both Holly Isenberg and Brianna Kresback each had two hits. Pitcher Erika Colangelo started the game for the Hawks and struck out four batters in eight innings.
Hunter scored two runs in the first inning on a single by
Sophia Ponce to right center field scoring Brianna Kresback, then Holly Isenberg followed with an RBI single to left center field scoring
Molly Meehan. The Dolphins scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a slight advantage over the Hawks, 3-2.
In the fourth inning,
Julia Lipovac tied the game for Hunter scoring on a
Kristen McGoldrick RBI single to left field. Molley Meehan gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice-fly out to left field as Briana Lombardo crossed the plate. Hunter extended their lead to 5-3 on a Meaghan O'Shea single to the infield scoring McGoldrick.
The Hawks fell behind 6-5 by the seventh inning as Staten Island hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to take the lead.
In the seventh inning trailing the #2 seeded Dolphins by one run, Hunter added on two runs behind a
Julia Lipovac sacrifice-fly out to deep center field scoring O'Shea and Meehan for a 7-6 lead. The Dolphins extended the game into extra innings scoring the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hunter's Erika Colangelo allowed 12 hits and six earned runs after pitching her fourth game of the CUNYAC Championships. She led the Hawks with great poise and held off the Dolphins offense.
But the Dolphins were able to muscle out two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning after Hunter scored only run in the top of the inning. Those final two runs crowned Staten Island the 2013 CUNYAC Champions, while the Hawks earned runner-up honors after picking up three wins in two days.
The Hawks conclude their 2013 season with a 15-28 overall record and a 8-7 CUNYAC conference record.
