Hawks Sweep Elmira And Rutgers-Camden

NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter Hawks women's volleyball team went 2-0 at this afternoon's Tri-Match at the Hunter Sportsplex. The Hawks swept both their opponents, Elmira College and Rutgers-Camden. With the victories, the Hawks improve to 15-13 on the season.
 
Hunter 3 Elmira 0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-22)
 
The Hawks fell behind early in the first set to the Soaring Eagles having to fight back from a 16-10 deficit midway through. The Hawks showed their poise and determination fighting back to tie the match at 17, thanks to back-to-back kills by ECAC Rookie of the Week Julia Connolly and sophomore Karolina Gajda. Gajda would provide two more kills along with Samantha Barrett and Lucia Stosic to secure the 25-19 set win. The Hawks totaled 11 kills in the set.
 
In the second set began as a back and forth affair with neither team being able to get more than two points ahead of the other for the first 25 points. With the score 13-12, the Hawks would take advantage of sloppy Elmira play and utilize their strong attacking skills to outscore the Soaring Eagles 12-3 to close out the set.
 
The third provided the Hawks with their toughest challenge. Elmira was able to get ahead of the Hawks 17-14 thanks to strong serves and attacks, but the Hawks were once again able to regroup and work together. Taylor Kordich's kill evened the set at 17 and it propelled the Hawks to pull ahead and keep the lead despite some strong play by Elmira.
 
Gajda led the Hawks with seven kills and two block assists. Stosic and Connolly had six kills each with Stosic adding in two solo blocks and four block assists, while Connolly had five block assists. Barrett and Kordich each had four kills with Kristine Cirucina totaling 24 assists. The Hawks had 11 team blocks in the match.

The Hawks opened up the first set on a dominant 10-1 run thanks to strong serving from Paulina Jobczyk and strong attacking from Gajda, Stosic and Connolly. Gajda was outstanding, at one point smashing three straight kills. Their attacking was consistent throughout the set.
 
The second set was back and forth throughout with the score being tied eight times and four lead changes. The Hawks once again displayed their determination and teamwork fighting off two different runs by the Scarlet Raptors once to cut the lead from 19-14 to 19-17 and another from 24-20 to 24-23. The Hawks closed out the 25-23 set win on a kill by Gajda.
 
The Hawks dominated the third set; it was an overall team effort with everyone doing a bit of everything to help propel the team. Strong serving from Kordich, Jobczyk, and strong net play with five players recording one kill in the set.
 
Gajda had a game-high 13 kills to go along with two block assists. Connolly totaled nine kills while hitting .467%. Kordich chipped in with five kills and three service aces and Jobczyk contributed four service aces. Ciurcina had a great overall game with 29 assists and 10 digs.
 
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they are set to take on Medgar Evers at 7pm.
