New York, NY – The Hunter Hawks softball team opened their 2014 season with a 12-11 victory on Friday afternoon against SUNY Old Westbury.
The Hawks got on the board in the 1
st inning thanks to a leadoff single by
Briana Kresback, who then advanced to 2
nd on a passed ball and stole 3
rd before scoring on a single by
Aleta Terrill. Terrill would come around to score a few batters later on a sacrifice fly by
Julia Lipovac.
Meghan O'Shea would score the Hawks 3
rd run via a bases loaded walk.
The Panthers would respond in the top of the 2
nd with four runs only to see their lead evaporate when the Hawks would score three in the bottom of the inning.
In the 3
rd, the Panthers cut the lead to 6-5 but the Hawks would counter with two runs in the bottom of the inning when
Nicole Fillisetti scored on a fielder's choice and
Taylor Crofts scored on a single by O'Shea.
The Panthers scored two to tie the game at 8 in the 6
th on a single by Protasiewicz. Fillisetti and
Toniann Kirk scored in the bottom of the inning to give the Hawks a 10-8 lead heading to the 7
th.
In the 7
th the Panthers scored three runs to take an 11-10 lead. Murray scored on a single by Howley and Howley and Valdes scored on a dropped fly ball.
In the bottom of the inning, Lipovac led of the inning with a single and would come around to tie the game on a bases loaded walk. The next batter,
Kristen McGoldrick would knock in
Victoria Slavik to give the Hawks a 12-11 victory.
It was a well-rounded offensive attack for the Hawks with eight players knocking in a run. O'Shea went 2-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored; Terrill went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Erika Colangelo picked up her 1
st win of the season in relief, she went 4.1 innings giving up 4 ER and striking out four.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow when they travel to New Jersey to take on Richard Stockton College in a double-header.
