BOX SCORE 2 NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter women's volleyball team kicked off their 2014 season at the NYU Labor Day Tournament Friday afternoon with two matches. The Hawks lost their first match 3-0 against North Central College but rallied in their second match with a 3-0 win over Rowan University.
In the first matchup against North Central, the Hawks battled in all three sets. The first set was a clash that saw seven lead changes, ultimately the North Central Cardinals prevailed winning 25-23. The second set was even tighter with 13 lead changes but once again the Hawks fell 26-24. The Cardinals won the third set 25-17.
"I was very happy with our patience and persistence in our first match against North Central," said head coach
Val Lang. "We hung with them really well the 1
st and 2
nd sets with a few errors from us that made the difference in the 3
rd set."
The Hawks were led by senior
Lucia Stosic who recorded five kills and five blocks. Sophomore
Samantha Barrett had three kills and three blocks with
Taylor Kordich recording 11 assists and
Karolina Gajda registering 13 digs.
In the 2
nd match against Rowan, the Hawks rallied to record a 3-0 sweep. The first set saw only two lead changes with the Hawks winning convincingly 25-20. The second set saw the lead change four times with the Hawks winning 25-23. The third set saw the Hawks dominate not allowing the Profs to ever take the lead in the set.
"Once we got to our second match we were able to re-focus and get fired up," said coach Lang. "We got a fast start and some consistent serving which allowed us to take a lead and build confidence."
Freshman
Julia Connolly led the team with nine kills, Kordich chipped in with seven kills of her own to go along with four serving aces and 16 assists. Stosic once again was awesome at the net recording six kills and six blocks, transfer junior
Luverie Lumbera chipped in with 13 digs.
"We've built up some confidence today and we are excited for another day of competition tomorrow," said coach Lang.
The Hawks stand at 1-1 and will continue in the NYU Labor Day Tournament Saturday at 9:30am when they take on Centre College.
