BOX SCORE 2 NEW YORK, NY - The Hunter softball team continued their stellar start their 2015 season, sweeping CUNYAC foe John Jay 8-3 in both games of a doubleheader matchup. The two wins improves the Hawks record to 14-2 overall and 9-1 in CUNYAC play.
In game one
Danielle Zurek pitched seven innings to pick up her fifth win of the season. The freshman allowed 3 runs (2 earned), scattering seven hits and striking out nine Bloodhound batters.
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead after the 2nd inning scoring in the 1st on an fielders choice and in the 2nd on an RBI double by
Christine Kline.
The Bloodhounds would tie it up in the top of the 4th inning on a homerun by Danielle Minaya and an RBI single by Jennifer Varela. In the Hawks half of the 4th,
Taylor Crofts would smack a two-run double giving the lead back to the Hawks. Crofts would come around to score when
Briana Kresback laced a single to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead. Kresback would steal home on a throw down to second back giving the Hawks a 6-2 lead.
Nalena Cruzado would get one run back for the Bloodhounds in the top of the 6th with an RBI double. The Hawks would work two bases loaded walks in their half of the 6th inning giving them an 8-3 lead.
In game two, the Bloodhounds would go up 2-0 in the first inning when Jessica Zaccari drove in two with a single. The Hawks would get one back in their half of the inning on an RBI double by
Meghan O'Shea.
Kresback would tie the score up in the 3rd when she hit her second home run of the season.
Minaya would double for the Bloodhounds in the 5th inning giving the visitors a 3-2 lead.
In the Hawks half of the 5th pinch hitter Stephanie Abolt would smack a two run double to put her team up 4-3, a lead the Hawks wouldn't surrender.,
Crofts and Kline would each hit two run home runs in the 6th inning giving the Hawks an 8-3.
Sara Beck went the distance earning her eighth win of the season. Beck gave up 3 runs (2 earned) while surrendering six hits and striking out nine Bloodhound batters.
The Hawks offense was led by Crofts (4-for-8, 4R, 4RBI), Kresback (3-for-8, 3R, 2RBI) and Kline (3-for-5, 4R, 3RBI, BB).
The Hawks return to action April 15 when they will take on Rutgers-Newark at 4pm.
