BOX SCORE 2 NEWARK, NJ - The Hunter softball team split their non-conference doubleheader matchup against Rutgers-Newark, winning game one 4-2 but then dropping game two 9-8. This puts the Hawks record at 15-3 overall.
In game one Hawks starter
Erika Colangelo improved to 6-2 on the season going the distance, surrendering two runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
The offense started for the Hawks in top of the 1st inning when
Victoria Slavik singled home
Taylor Crofts and
Briana Kresback to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders tied it up in their half of the 1st scoring their two runs on a fielders choice and RBI single. That would be all the scoring they would get off of Colangelo, who surrendered three hits in the inning and then only allowed three more the rest of the game.
The Hawks would take back the lead for good in the 6th inning, as
Meghan O'Shea would score on an RBI groundout by Stephanie Abolt and then
Aleta Terrill would add another insurance run with an RBI single to left, scoring Slavik to make it 4-2 Hawks.
The top four batters for the Hawks all scored a run and had six of the Hawks seven hits for the game. Crofts went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Slavik would lead the way going 2-for-3 with a run scored and 2RBI.
In game two, the Hawks fell behind early as they trailed 5-0 after the 3rd inning. The offense would come alive in the 4th and 5th innings as the Hawks scored seven runs to take a 7-5 lead.
The scoring began in the 4th with an RBI single by
Kristen McGoldrick, she would come around to score along with Terrill on an two-run single by Crofts cutting the lead to 5-3. Crofts would score later in the inning making it 5-4 Scarlet Raiders at the end of 4.
In the 5th, Abolt would smash a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 6-5 lead and then Crofts would drive in Terrill to give the Hawks a 7-5 advantage.
The Scarlet Raiders would tie it up in their half of the 5th when Kelly Yusko smacked a two-run home run of her own. They would take the lead in the 6th inning on an RBI double by Anna Carlson.
Christine Kline would hit an RBI triple in the top of the 7th to tie the game at 8 but the Scarlet Raiders would win the game on a walk-off single by Kelsey Lucas to win the game 9-8.
Sara Beck started the game for the Hawks going 3 innings, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on five hits.
Danielle Zurek game in, in relief and pitched the final 3.1 innings giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on eight hits and took the loss dropping her record to 5-3 on the season.
Crofts once again led the offense going 2-for-5 with one run scored and 3RBI. Kresback went 2-for-5, Slavik went 2-for-4 and Abolt went 1-for-3 with 2RBI. Terrill scored three runs for the Hawks while going 2-for-2 after replacing
Amy Pirozek early in the game.
The Hawks return to action Thursday April 16 when they will take on CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 4pm.
