Offense Powers Hawks To Split Against Brooklyn College

Hawks Lost 1-0 In Game 1 & Win Game 2 11-6

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

BROOKLYN, NY - The Hunter softball team powered their way to splitting a doubleheader against CUNYAC rival Brooklyn College on Thursday night. The Hawks were hard-luck losers in game one, falling 1-0 but came back to win game two, 11-6 to improve their record to 16-4 overall and 10-2 in CUNYAC play.

In game one, Erika Colangelo pitched six strong innings allowing only one run on five hits but was out done by Bulldogs starter Kayla Hill who shut out the Hawks over seven innings allowing six hits.

The Hawks had a chance to get on the board in the top of the first inning when they loaded the bases after four batters. They would strand two runners in the inning after grounding into a double play and striking out in back-to-back at bats, ending the threat.

Colangelo was outstanding only allowing three hits through the first five innings. The Bulldogs would get to Colangelo in the bottom of the 6th when with two outs, Kimberly Brennan doubled home a run to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Taylor Crofts had another multi-hit game for the Hawks going 2-for-3 and Stephanie Abolt was the only other batter to get two hits as she went 2-for-3 as well.

In game two the Hawks bats came alive as they would score a run in each of the first three innings, all RBI singles.

The Hawks took a five run lead in the 4th inning after a two-run double by Victoria Slavik and back-to-back RBI singles from Abolt and Aleta Terrill gave the Hawks an 8-3 lead.

The Bulldogs would answer back in their hafl of the 4th, scoring four to cut the lead to 8-6.

In the 5th, Taylor Crofts scored on an RBI groundout, followed by a Christine Kline RBI single, giving the Hawks a 10-6 lead.

Meghan O'Shea would draw a bases loaded walk in the 6th inning to add one more insurance run for pitcher Sara Beck.

Beck came in, in relief of Danielle Zurek, who started for the Hawks going 3.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. Beck pitched the final 3.2 innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out six to earn her ninth win of the season.

Terrill led the way going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Crofts went 3-for-5 scoring two runs and driving in one. Briana Kresback went 2-for-5 scoring three runs and three other Hawks, Victoria Slavik, Kline and Abolt all had two hits.

The Hawks return to the diamond Tuesday April 21 when they will host Stevens Tech in a non-conference doubleheader with the first game scheduled to begin at 3:30pm.
