Softball Gets A Win Over St. Joseph's Brooklyn at Virginia Beach Tournament

Hawks Go 1-4 in Season Opening Weekend

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 | BOX SCORE 3 | BOX SCORE 4 Virginia Beach, VA. - Hunter College softball opened up the 2018 season with the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast tournament, getting a win over St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Friday.

The Hawks start year with a 1-3 record, falling to Shenandoah University, SUNY New Paltz and Frostburg State.

Shenandoah 14, Hunter 0
The Purple and Gold dropped the first game of the day, 14-0 to the Hornets. Caroline Bibula, Brittney Salvador and Gianna Raimondi each got a hit in the loss.

Hunter 10, St. Joseph's Brooklyn 1
The Hawks bounced back in game two, getting an early advantage when freshman Colleen McCoy led the game off with a double down the right field line. McCoy would late score off a fielders choice by Bibula. Hunter continued to score as Annalise McClellan doubled into the gap to score Stefanie Abolt and put the Hawks up 2-0.

Despite the Bears scoring in the second inning, Hunter went on to rally eight runs at the bottom of the fourth. Raimondi started the inning with a single down the right field line and McCoy reached on her second hit of the day. Jamie Durso followed that up with an infield single, while Abolt walked and McClellan and Alisha Dovicsak drove in a run each. 

Bibula finished the game with three RBI's, while McClellan posted a 2-2 day with a walk and two RBI's. Salvador, Raimondi, Durso and McCoy tallied two hits each for the Hawks in the victory.

New Paltz 12, Hunter 4
On Saturday the Hawks fell behind to New Paltz until a big third inning. McCoy started it off with a home run, while Durso followed with a walk and Bibula singled to get on base. With two players on Abolt homered for three RBI's and help the Hawks pull ahead, 4-3.

The Purple and Gold came up short in the remaining innings, unable to stop New Paltz from scoring to fall, 12-4.

Frostburg 6, Hunter 4
Hunter fell in a close game to Frostburg in their last contest of the tournament. The Hawks trailed the Bobcats after the first three innings 6-0, but managed to get on the board in the fourth.

Salvador started out the Hunter run with single, before Samantha Molloy followed it up with a single of her own. McClellan then hit a single to advance Molloy and Salvador to second and third base. Alyson Bricker reached on a fielder's choice to allow Salvador to score. Dalailah Gomez got a hit to score Molloy as the Hawks trailed by just four runs after the fourth.

Hunter kept it up in the fifth inning as Abolt crushed a double to get Durso to home plate. McClellan then singled for an RBI as Abolt scored and the Hawks made the score a close 6-4.
 
The Purple and Gold were unable to make up the difference in the remaining innings as the Bobcats took it, 6-4.

Hunter returns to action on March 22 when they travel to York College for a doubleheader.
