BOX SCORE 2 Staten Island N.Y. - Hunter College softball made Saturday's CUNYAC Championship final into an exciting one, but eventually fell to The College of Staten Island with a score of 9-6.
Hunter started the day by getting an 8-0 victory over #4 seeded John Jay College to advance to the championship. After falling to #2 CSI on Friday, the Hawks needed to win their second game on Saturday to stay alive.
Things started slowly for the Purple and Gold, who quickly gave up a run in the second inning. The Dolphins went to work in the third, finding six runs to go up 7-0 over the Hawks. They scored two more in the fourth for a commanding 9-0 advantage.
Hunter regained composure at the bottom of the fourth as
Alana Vezza singled to center field to get on base and
Brittney Salvador doubled to put the Hawks on the board.
Forced to score at least two more runs to keep the game going, the Hawks performed under pressure in the fifth.
Allyson Bricker and
Jamie Durso each got on base and
Gianna Raimondi hit a SAC fly to move them over.
Colleen McCoy recorded a huge hit, allowing the two runners to score, and Vezza followed that up with a double, making the score 9-4. With two runners on, Salvador hit another double to earn two RBI's and close the gap to just three runs.
The Purple and Gold stopped the Dolphins from scoring again, but could not manage to tie it up in the remaining two innings to fall with a final score of 9-6.
The Hawks will find out if they will appear in the ECAC Championships on Monday, May 6th.
