Women's Volleyball starts the 2021 season

In a tri-match at Steven's Tech WVB starts the season for the Hawks

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Hoboken, NJ-  The Hunter College Hawks women's volleyball team restarted sports at Hunter College for the first time in 543 days, when we last played a Men's volleyball match.  The Hawks traveled to Hoboken, New Jersey for a tri-match against host Steven's Tech and Muhlenberg College.  First year head coach Andrew Woolward had a mix of veterans, new comers, and rookies playing for the Hawks.

In match #1 Steven's Tech was able to handle the Hawks in 3 sets.  Hunter came out of the gates a little slow, but bounced right back for a hard fought second and third set.  In set #1 Steven's went on a 10-0 run and maintained control with a 25-12 win.  In set number 2 the Hawks bounced with back with a 5-0 run to open and used another 4-0 run to add to the lead.  Steven's fought back and tied it 18-18 before Steven's used a 4 point run to take control that Hunter could not take back.  The ducks took set number 2 25-22.  In the third and final set Steven's started with a 5-0 run before the Hawks answered back with a 5 point run to get it to 13-14.  Steven's never gave the lead up and held on for a 25-20 and a 3 set win.

In her collegiate debut Erin Duggan led the Hawks with 8 kills on 27 swings, she added 9 digs to go along with her offensive numbers.  Justine Smith paced Hunter with 14 assists, 2 aces and 6 digs herself.

In match #2 Hunter had a back and forth affair with Muhlenberg College, but ultimately dropped the match 3-1.  In set #1 Hunter never quite got over the top to close out the set, despite having an early lead.  The hawks dropped set #1 25-19.  In set #2 Hunter took the lead after a 7-7 tie and never gave it back.  a 6-0 run late in the set gave the hawks the lead for the win, taking set #2 25-18.   In set #3 Hunter had 2 separate 5 point runs that were not enough to take control of the set, the side out they needed never came and they dropped set #3 26-24.  Hunter came out firing in set #4 with an early 10-3 lead, and the Hawks were also up 18-11.  Muhlenberg fought all the way back and would not let Hunter take ultimate control stealing a match clinching win with a 25-23 win.

Continuing her stellar play Erin Duggan led the hawks with 11 kills, 6 aces and 20 digs, all bests for Hunter.  Mariam Ouattara continued her solid play for Hunter with 11 kills on 31 swings and led the Hawks in blocks.  Justine Smith handed out 29 assists in the 4 set match, while Kiara Abreu had 12 assists and 13 digs in her debut for Hunter College.  Erin Hyman making her college debut as a freshman had 19 digs on the back line for Hunter.

The Hawks look to grab a win in their next match as they travel to Mt. St. Vincent on Thursday 9/9 first serve is 6pm.
