BOX SCORE 2 New York, N.Y. - The Hunter College softball team kicked off the 2022 campaign with a win over the College of Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday, but fell in the second game of the doubleheader to open their season.
Game 1: Hunter 6, CMSV 4
Hunter struck first in the bottom of the second inning, putting two runs on the scoreboard and added another three in the following inning to take a 5-0 lead over the Dolphins. The visitors managed to cut the lead to one as they scored their first run in the third and put up a three-spot in the fourth, however the Hawks tacked on one more in the bottom half to keep their opponents at bay.
On offense,
Olivia Palumbo and
Sophia Perez both recorded a two-hit game, combining for four RBI. Palumbo recorded her first triple of the season, accounting for three RBI in the victory.
T'ea Panagakos went the distance for the Hawks, throwing all seven innings to earn her first win of the year. Across seven frames she allowed as many hits, but fanned eight
Game 2: CMSV 8, Hunter 7
In a turnaround scenario, CMSV scored seven runs in the last three innings to secure the win.
Hunter College got on the board in the bottom of the first with two runs, and after the Dolphins added one in the top of the fourth, the Hawks exploded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-1 lead. The visitors strung together some hits to add four runs of their own to cut the home team advantage to two.
The Dolphins closed out the contest with three runs in the top of the seventh to overcome the hosts, to earn the win.
Lorna Alec remained composed in the circle for CMSV, in her first collegiate start, striking out sic while allowing nine hits and six earned runs. Her efforts also awarded her the first win of her career.

Leah Dillon struck out six as
Nicole Bowe and Palumbo each added two hits apiece.
The Hawks' next game is Friday, March 18 at Montclair State University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
