Hunter Kicks Off Season with Competitive Doubleheader at Stevens

BOX SCORE

HOBOKEN, N.J. — The Hunter College softball team (0-2) opened its 2025 season on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology (3-7) at Waterfront Park. The Hawks showed resilience and late-game fight, but ultimately fell 7-4 in Game 1 and 9-8 in Game 2, as Stevens walked it off in the bottom of the seventh.

Game 1
Hunter opened the season with a 7-4 loss to Stevens on Wednesday afternoon at Waterfront Park in Hoboken, N.J. Despite a slow start, falling behind 6-0 through three innings, the Hawks demonstrated their resilience. Adriana Ramirez sparked the offense in the fourth inning with an RBI double to left center, bringing home Grace Basil, who had singled earlier in the inning. Moments later, Jessica Fowler drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing Nicole Bowe to cross the plate and cut the deficit to 6-2.

The Hawks made one final push in the seventh, loading the bases in an effort to close the gap. Olivia Palumbo came home on a wild pitch, and moments later, Grace Basil grounded out to second base, allowing Paige Witalec to score from third. The two-run inning cut the deficit to 7-4, but Stevens recorded the final out to end the rally and secure the win.

Grace Basil pitched all six innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits, while also contributing offensively with an RBI single. Sonia Rosales and Paige Witalec led the Hawks with two hits each, while Adriana Ramirez, Jessica Fowler, and Grace Basil each drove in a run.

Game 2
The Hawks shook off their Game 1 performance with a strong showing in Game 2, registering nine hits and scoring eight runs over several innings. They took an early lead with two runs in the first inning before breaking out for five runs in the fifth, bringing the score to 8-6 in their favor. Although Hunter maintained control heading into the seventh inning, Stevens staged a late rally, capitalizing on a leadoff walk, a triple, and a single through the left side to complete the comeback.

Sonia Rosales spearheaded the offensive effort, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jessica Fowler launched a solo home run to center field during Hunter's fifth-inning surge. Grace Basil and Nicole Bowe each recorded an RBI, with Basil bringing in a run via a sacrifice fly.

In the circle, Isabella Thumhart delivered a complete game, pitching 6.1 innings while allowing nine runs on nine hits with eight walks. Despite giving up early runs, Thumhart found her rhythm and held Stevens scoreless in the third, fifth, and sixth innings, allowing Hunter to maintain its lead until the final frame.
