NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Hunter College men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Wilton Wright Outdoor Invitational this weekend, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. The Hawks continued their strong season, with multiple student-athletes recording personal bests at the meet.
Hunter excelled in the distance events, led by senior
Brian Guillermo, who placed seventh overall in the 5,000m run with a personal and conference-best time of 15:57.70. He was followed by
Mateo Penafiel (16:24.83) and
Melvil Badier (18:00.64). In the 10,000m race,
Brian Arias turned in another conference-leading performance, crossing the line in a personal-best 35:07.79. He was followed by
Hengzhi Zhu (32:35.98) and
Harrison Abarca (41:36.35).
In sprints,
Benjamin Landheim ran a 53.74 in the 400m, while
Jocsan Crespo and
Hamza Elsherbiny competed in the 100m dash, posting times of 11.92 and 12.00, respectively.
In the field,
Solomon Kumi led Hunter in the jumps. The indoor season MVP posted the third-best high jump in the CUNYAC standings at 1.75m. He also notched the no. 2 marks in the conference in both the long jump (6.10m) and triple jump (11.56m).
Cedric Dennis and Crespo also competed in the jumps, with Dennis landing marks of 5.82m in the long jump and 9.88m in the triple jump. Crespo posted jumps of 5.19m (long) and 10.82m (triple).
Jonathan Cauchi led the way in the throws. He recorded a team-best mark of 11.92m in the shot put, followed by Landheim (8.65m) and
Cristian Rocha (7.62m). In the discus, Cauchi threw 23.03m, while Rocha recorded a mark of14.76m. The duo also represented Hunter in the javelin, with throws of 37.06m (Cauchi) and 21.20m (Rocha).
The Hawks return to action on April 18 when they travel to Widener University for the Paul Donohue Invitational.
