Baltimore, MD – The Hunter men's fencing team picked up 19-8 victories over the University of Virginia and Saint John's University Johns Hopkins Invitational in Baltimore, MD. The Hawks finished the event with a 2-4 record, falling to Maryland, UNC, William & Mary and Virginia Tech.
Against Virginia, Hunter was led by the superb play from both their foil and epee squads which each earned 7-2 wins. Junior
Josh Lopez (Woodhaven, NY/Transit Tech) and freshman
Timothy Stein (Centereach, NY/Centereach) each posted three wins in epee, while freshmen
Marcus Ng (Flushing, NY/Townsend Harris) and
Jose Samora (New York, NY/Frederick Douglas Acad.) each had three victories in foil. Junior
Yun Fei Li (Brooklyn, NY/94th) earned three victories in a 5-4 win in sabre.
In their victory against Saint John's, the Hawks took sabre and foil 6-3, led by
Samora in foil who added three more victories to his totals on the day.
Samora would go onto finish the Invitational 17-1 with his only defeat coming at the hands of a UNC fencer 5-3. Hunter also took a 7-2 win in epee once again behind the skills of
Lopez and
Stein who each posted three victories.
Hunter returns to action on Sunday, February 10 when they travel to Newark, NJ for the New Jersey Institute of Technology Invitational (NJIT) which is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
