Fencing Kicks-off Season at Nikke Franke Classic

Philadelphia, Pa.- The Hunter College men's fencing team kicked off their season at the Nikke Franke Classic on Oct. 26, hosted by Temple University.

Foil
The foil squad showed resilience, with David Xing leading in a tie for 69th place. Xing demonstrated strong form in the initial pool round, claiming a 5-1 victory over Lucas Oberdiek (Swarthmore) and a 5-4 win against Henry Fedonchik (Haverford). He advanced to the direct elimination round, where he fell in a competitive 15-9 bout to Liam Thomas of Stevens Tech.

Isaac Ramirez, tying for 76th place, also cleared the initial pool with a dominant 5-1 victory over Liam Conroy (Wagner College) before being eliminated by Rob Rountree of NJIT. Isteaq Zim faced challenges in the initial pools but rebounded in the consolation round, racking up five victories against fencers from Temple, University of Florida, NJIT, Drexel, and Swarthmore to secure a tie for 87th place.

Chris Lin, who also tied for 87th place, displayed determination in the consolation round with three wins over opponents from Rowan, Temple, and Swarthmore. Pablo Greene wrapped up the foil group with a tie for 94th place; after a rough start, he found his stride in the consolation pool, securing four wins over Drexel, Rowan, Wagner, and Temple.

Epee
In the men's epee, Steve Zhu finished in a tie for 101st place. After a challenging start in the pools, Zhu rebounded in the consolation round, clinching a 5-2 victory against Elijah Nepomuceno (Swarthmore) and a 5-0 win over Rowan Clarke (Temple). He battled closely against competitors from Haverford and Stevens Tech, with two narrow 4-5 losses, underscoring his competitive spirit.

Sabre
Representing the Purple and Gold in the men's sabre, Nahuel Muhamad tied for 72nd place. Muhamad faced a tough initial pool round but fought back in the consolation round, earning a decisive 5-1 victory over Tory Li (Temple) and a 5-0 win against Blayne Cook (Swarthmore).

Hunter's season continues on Nov. 10 as the team travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to compete at the Vassar Invitational.
