Jakubiak & Hawks Defeat Bearcats In Consolation Match of Stevens Invitational

Hoboken, NJ – Freshman outside hitter Wojciech Jakubiak (Poland/Grover Cleveland) had a team high .632 hitting percentage with 12 kills and no errors as the Hawks defeated the Bearcats of Baruch College, 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-24) in the consolation match of the Stevens Invitational on Sunday, January 27 at the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, NJ.

Freshman outside hitter Pablo Oliveira (Brazil/Newcomers) led the Hawks in kills for the sixth straight match, recording 17 with a.519 hitting percentage. Freshman middle blocker Eryk Kowalski (Poland/Environmental Studies) contributed nine kills and sophomore setter Zacarias Ripoll (Puerto Plata, D.R./John F. Kennedy) finished the day with 41 assists, eight digs and six kills.

Junior Daniel Levent (Forest Hills, NY/American Studies) was the offensive leader for Baruch with 16 kills and also had seven digs. He was followed by sophomore outside hitter Jonathan Tuwaidan (Woodside, NY/W.C. Bryant) and freshman middle blocker Kirill Yagnetinskiy (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) who each chipped in eight kills in the defeat.

This was the first meeting between Hunter and Baruch since March 22, 2007 when the Bearcats shocked Hunter with a 3-1 victory in the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship Match. Today, Hunter proved to be the better team, but the game does not count towards conference standings. Hunter finishes the Stevens Invitational 1-2, while Baruch fell in all four of its matches during the weekend.

The Hawks improve to 4-2 on the season and will now prepare for a weekend road trip when they head up to Providence, Rhode Island to face Johnson & Wales on Saturday, February 2 and will then travel to Beverly, Massachusetts to take on Endicott College.
