New York, NY – It was a classic CUNY Athletic Conference men's volleyball showdown Tuesday night as the Hunter College Hawks squared off against the two-time defending champion Bearcats of Baruch College and it would be Hunter improving to 14-0 in the CUNYAC with a 3-2 (30-23, 30-23, 28-30, 25-30, 15-9) victory, their third over the Bearcats this season, in an electric night at the Hunter Sportsplex.
After winning the first two games 30-23, Baruch stole the third 30-28 and forced the decisive fifth game with a 30-25 win in the fourth game. Hunter opened up the fifth game with three straight points including two aces from freshman outside hitter
Wojciech Jakubiak (Poland/Grover Cleveland) who hit both back corners on consecutive serves.
Jakubiak would finish the match with 13 kills and five aces.
Freshman outside hitter
Pablo Oliveira (Brazil/Newcomers) led the Hawks with 22 kills, while freshman middle blocker
Eryk Kowalski (Poland/Environmental Studies) added 12 kills and sophomore setter
Zacarias Ripoll (Puerto Plata, D.R./John F. Kennedy) finished with 50 assists, 14 kills, eight digs and four solo blocks.
Bearcat middle blocker
Danial Levent (Forest Hills, NY/American Studies) recorded a match high 33 kills, hitting .433 percent and also added nine digs and five total blocks, while sophomore setter
Radu Wyrwas (Bialystok, Poland/Grover Cleveland) finished with 51 assists and five kills.
Tonight's victory improves the Hawks to 21-3 on the season, extending their win streak to 15 games, and they remain unbeaten in the CUNYAC at 14-0. Hunter returns to action this weekend, when they are scheduled to face Lancaster Bible at 5:00 p.m. in their first match at the York College Invitational in Jamaica, NY on Friday, March 14.
