Jamaica, NY – Freshman outside hitter
Wojciech Jakubiak (Poland/Grover Cleveland), averaged 13.6 kills in three matches, was named the Most Valuable Player of the York Invitational where the Hawks finished 3-0 picking up wins against Lancaster Bible, Elms College and Villa Julie on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15.
Hunter opened up the Invitational with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-25, 30-14) win over Lancaster Bible led by
Jakubiak who finished with a team high ten kills, five digs and three aces. Sophomore setter
Zacarias Ripoll (Puerto Plata, D.R./John F. Kennedy) added 40 assists, seven digs, six kills and three aces and freshman middle blocker
Eryk Kowalski (Poland/Environmental Studies) recorded six kills and four total blocks.
The Hawks second match on Friday night didn't finished until Saturday morning technically as they battle Elms College to a 3-1 (21-30, 31-29, 30-23, 30-22) win, coming back to win three straight after dropping the first game to the Blazers.
Jakubiak had his best match of the weekend, scoring 19 kills with a .557 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter
Pablo Oliveira (Brazil/Newcomers) also made his presence known with 15 kills, while Ripoll tallied 45 assists, ten kills and seven digs.
They then closed out the weekend with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-26) win over Villa Julie on Saturday morning to finish the weekend 3-0 and extend their win streak to 18 games.
Jakubiak once again led the Hawks with 12 kills and 11 digs, while
Kowalski added 11 kills, hitting .600 on the day.
Hunter (25-3) returns to action on Wednesday when they host #10 Philadelphia Biblical College (20-4) in one of their most challenging matches of the season. That match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Hunter Sportsplex.
