Zacarias Ripoll (Puerto Plata, D.R./John F. Kennedy), who completed the hat trick this week by being named the AVCA, NECVA and CUNYAC Player of the Week, led the team with 23 assists and eight kills as the top seeded Hawks advanced to the semifinals of the CUNYAC Championship Tournament with a 3-0 (30-6, 30-3, 30-2) victory over the #8 Medgar Evers College in men's volleyball action Tuesday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.
Freshman outside hitter
Wojciech Jakubiak (Poland/Grover Cleveland), who was named the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, set a school record for most aces in a match with 15, surpassing Assistant Coach Justin Stack who set the original record of 12 against Medgar Evers on January 28, 2002.
Freshman middle blocker
Eryk Kowalski (Poland/Environmental Studies) finished tonight with a team high of 11 kills, hitting .917, while freshman outside hitter
Pablo Oliveira (Brazil/Newcomers) added ten kills with a hitting percentage of .692.
The undermanned Cougars, who dressed just six players, had a tough outing against a Hawk team that has now won 21 straight matches and are 28-3 overall.
The #1 Hawks will now face the winner of #5 City Tech at #4 Lehman in Thursday's Semifinal match which will be held in the B3 Gymnasium of the Hunter Sportsplex at 6:00 p.m. If the Hawks advance, they will then play in the finals which will are set to be played at 8:00 p.m.
